An annual is a plant that will bloom for a growing season but will not return the following year.

This describes the light condition a plant is best suited for. When selecting a plant for your garden, consider how much direct sunlight the area receives:

Full Sun: 6+ hours of direct sun

Part Sun: 4-6 hours of direct sun

Shade: Less than 4 hours of direct sun

This describes a plants preference for how much time the ground around them is wet after a rain:

Dry: Does not like “wet feet”; good for a well-draining soil that does not hold standing water

Medium: Temporarily tolerates wet feet but does not want to be in standing water

Wet: Tolerates wet feet; good selection for a damp area or rain garden
